MSC Cruises Installs Galaxy Gaming Operating System on North American Fleet
AI-GENERATEDMSC Cruises has integrated the Galaxy Operating System across seven ships, introducing progressive jackpots to 30 blackjack tables in its North American casinos.
The high-seas casino experience is undergoing a significant technological transformation through a new partnership between MSC Cruises and gaming supplier Galaxy Gaming. In the first phase of this rollout, MSC's North American fleet has been equipped with a specialized operating system. This system allows passengers to access features at traditional table games that are typically associated with digital slot machines, specifically focusing on linked winning opportunities that extend beyond standard bets.
The Galaxy Operating System (GOS) is at the core of this upgrade. MSC Cruises aims to increase the attractiveness of its onboard casinos and provide a more dynamic gaming environment for its guests. The implementation follows an extensive evaluation period where the platform's flexibility and service quality were tested. For the cruise line, this represents a vital step in keeping pace with the technological standards of major land-based casinos in hubs like Las Vegas or Atlantic City.
Numbers and facts
The concrete implementation currently covers 30 blackjack tables distributed across seven different ships in the fleet. These tables now utilize Galaxy Gaming's GOS platform to offer customized progressive jackpots. A progressive jackpot is characterized by a small portion of each bet flowing into a shared pool that grows continuously until a player hits the required winning combination. This marks the first time MSC Cruises has integrated such a system for table games on its vessels.
The collaboration between the two companies has a significant history. Greg Stewart, Vice President of Global Sales at Galaxy Gaming, provided insight into the project's timeline:
"This milestone represents nearly two years of collaboration between MSC Cruises and Galaxy Gaming. The successful rollout demonstrates the strength of our technology platform and our team’s commitment to delivering exceptional service and support for our customers." - Greg Stewart, Vice President of Global Sales at Galaxy Gaming
Background
MSC Cruises is known for its ambitious growth plans across various global regions. The casino experience is a central part of the entertainment program for adult guests. The decision to partner with Galaxy Gaming was made after an intense evaluation phase, focusing not only on technical performance but also on guest experience and scalability. Burkay Gokgoz, Director of Casino Operations for USA at MSC Cruises, sees the innovation as a clear competitive advantage.
"Integrating solutions such as Galaxy table game progressive jackpots to MSC Cruises’ casinos creates a more dynamic and engaging environment for players. This milestone reflects the strength of our commitment to innovation and guest satisfaction as we bring an elevated gaming experience to guests onboard." - Burkay Gokgoz, Director of Casino Operations for USA at MSC Cruises
For Galaxy Gaming, this contract solidifies their position in the specialized cruise ship gaming sector. Since these ships often operate in international waters, they follow specific maritime regulations, yet the technical infrastructure must be robust enough to function reliably without a permanent high-speed land connection.
Why it matters for German players
For German vacationers planning an MSC cruise departing from North America, the onboard gaming experience will change noticeably. When German citizens are active in international waters, the laws of the ship's flag or the specific regulations for international waters usually apply. This means that the strict protection mechanisms of the German State Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV 2021) generally do not apply on these ships. While online gambling in Germany is subject to a strict deposit limit of 1,000 Euros per month monitored via the LUGAS system, cruise ships often have much higher or no fixed limits.
Betting limits also differ drastically. In German online casinos with a GGL license, slot stakes are limited to 1 Euro per spin, and table games like blackjack are still heavily restricted or unavailable online in many federal states. On the ship, however, players can now interact with the new Galaxy Gaming tables featuring progressive jackpots, offering a completely different level of volatility and dynamics compared to regulated gaming at home. German players should be aware that the national self-exclusion system OASIS has no effect at sea.
What it means for GGL-licensed casinos
Casinos licensed by the Gemeinsame Glücksspielbehörde der Länder (GGL) stand in direct contrast to such offers on cruise ships. The GGL license guarantees the highest level of safety and player protection but simultaneously prohibits many features that drive attractiveness in the international market. Progressive jackpots, like those Galaxy Gaming has now installed on MSC ships, are currently not permitted for slots in German online casinos to prevent excessive incentives to play.
The technological innovation at MSC Cruises highlights the pressure on German regulation. While international providers link their systems and lure players with large jackpots, German providers must convince through transparency and reliability. Transferring these maritime jackpot systems to the German online market is impossible under current law. Therefore, those who value the safety net provided by GlüStV 2021 should stick to providers on the GGL whitelist once they return to domestic soil, despite the temptations found while traveling.
Frequently asked questions
Which MSC Cruises ships are receiving the new system?
In the first phase, seven ships in the North American fleet were equipped with the Galaxy Operating System. A total of 30 blackjack tables with new features are now available there.
What are progressive jackpots in table games?
These are additional prize pools that grow through small portions of bets placed at the blackjack tables. They can be won by players who hit specific, rare card combinations.
Who is responsible for the technology behind the jackpots?
The technology is provided by Galaxy Gaming, a specialist in casino operating systems and table game innovations. The cooperation with MSC Cruises involved nearly two years of preparation.
Does German player protection apply on MSC ships?
No, in international waters or North American regions, the rules of the cruise operator apply instead of the German GlüStV 2021. Systems like LUGAS or OASIS are not active there, so players must manage their own budgets.
